Set Prospective

Fallout

March 25th, 2024 — Parker LaMascus

This article is part of our community-sourced Set Prospective series. We survey Cube designers before the set’s official release to document their first impressions of new cards.

Cube owners and vault dwellers have a lot in common. For instance, they both are seeking groups of survivors (how else will the cube-head find a post-apocalyptic draft pod?). Both appreciate power armor. And both love scavenging for tools in what other people consider trash! Magic’s Fallout Commander decks may not look like much, but there’s still plenty that’s worth braving the proverbial wasteland.

Results

A paltry 34 survey respondents for Fallout marks the lowest number of interested Cube curators for any set since Unfinity. Both sets privilege a sci-fi flavor over Magic’s usual fantasy, and both are direct-to-Legacy with the sneakily high-powered designs that usually entails.

Single Card Discussion

Pre-War Formalwear
Bottle-Cap Blast
Ian the Reckless

The most popular card from Fallout, Pre-War Formalwear, is exactly the kind of unique mechanical combination that tends to find success on Commander surveys — some curators like it for the novel synergies in a color that is historically light on reanimation; others may just be into it for the power.

The same goes for many of the other popular and highly-rated cards from this set. Ian the Reckless stands out as the most highly-rated card from Fallout, no doubt because cube owners who pursue

aggro decks will appreciate the synergistic hooks on the otherwise powerful creature.

Reprint Alert

Tarmogoyf
Wasteland
Skullclamp
Woodland Cemetery

Like most Commander precons, Fallout includes a wealth of reprints, but also updates their art and frames for the Universes Beyond treatment. There may be aesthetic reasons to prefer these, or it may be enough to just get powerful effects on the cheap.
