Murders at Karlov Manor Commander

March 3rd, 2024 — Parker LaMascus

This article is part of our community-sourced Set Prospective series. We survey Cube designers before the set’s official release to document their first impressions of new cards.

The Commander preconstructed decks that accompany each major Magic release are a good opportunity to pick up cheap reprints and, for Cube curators, a look at entirely new cards for consideration in their custom draft formats.

The Hits

Unshakable Tail
Merchant of Truth
Final-Word Phantom
Ransom Note

As usual with Commander-focused sets, the most popular cards among Cube curators tend to operate at a new nexus of synergy. Unshakable Tail is a great example: Zombie enabler, self-mill enabler, artifact-and-card-draw enabler, and it’s a 3/2 if you just want to beat down. The same goes for the other most popular cards from this set, Merchant of Truth, Final-Word Phantom, and Ransom Note.

Reprint Alert

Seedborn Muse
Reanimate
Necromancy
Toxic Deluge
Grave Titan
Sheltered Thicket

With every reprint-focused set comes an opportunity for budget-minded Cube owners to pick up powerful and historically significant staples at a friendlier price, or with updated rules text. In that vein, MKC is Necromancy’s first printing with updated Oracle text (although, as I struggled to parse that novella, I see why WotC was in no rush).
